What Not To Have On Your Resume

Your resume is one of the main determinant of the success of job application. It is therefore extremely important to make sure that you mention all your prominent achievements and experiences on your resume.

However, some people tend to get carried away when it comes to what one should include in one’s resume. Because first impressions last, it is essential that your resume does not contain any irrelevant material that turn away your chances of employment.

UNRELATED WORK EXPERIENCE AND HOBBIES

What’s the point of including your two years’ worth of experience as a music tutor in high school when you are applying for a job as an IT specialist? Irrelevant mentions on your resume dim the spotlight for the other related and important experiences on your resume. Make sure to include work experience that will actually contribute to your desired job in one way or another. Unrelated hobbies and work will burden your resume without contributing to your chances of getting employed.

A Badly Written Objective

A career objective can easily mess things up for you instead of making you look bright and ambitious. When you state your career objective, you are basically telling your prospective employer of your expectations from the job. This is not a very wise move. Not only can you easily be off point but it also makes you look self-centred. Imagine including something in your career objective that your employer is not able to offer. No better way to kiss your chances of employment with that particular employer goodbye.

UNPROFESSIONAL EMAIL ADDRESS

I think this is something that should be known and understood by all. Unprofessional emails such as jasonfootballer@____.com or ilovetaylorswift6@____.com seem highly unprofessional in the job market. They easily crumble down the rest of your resume, influencing a bad first impression. According to the Motley Fool, an unprofessional email address is a major problem for 35% of employers. Make sure to mention a professional email address that includes your name.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Any extra personal information that is not required by your recruiter should not be included on your resume. This includes your sex, your age, your home address, your religious beliefs, your sexual orientation, or any other personal information that does not have anything to do with your job. Stick to the point, list down your achievements, your qualifications and your work experience, that’s it. Staying professional is key!

When it comes to writing your resume, be confident and be mature. Include only what needs to be included and what can contribute positively to your application. Designing, drafting and executing your resume can be quite hectic especially if you are new to it.
